I had a 77 VW bus and had the usual noise problem. I used 1" thick Armaflex (it's a closed cell foam insulation used in the refrigeration industry) and covered the top of the engine (under the rubber mat) including the removable cover, and the area behind the rear seat all the way to the floor. Wonder of wonders... I could hear my radio, at normal levels, on the freeway again! I don't know what it would cost. I believe it came in a 4ft wide roll. I just used contact cement, the same thing they use in refrigeration.
