Subject:   Noise:SA in-line Exhaust vs. TiiCo conversion exhaust
Content-Type:   text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

I believe I noticed in photos of the South African Vanagon with the in-line 5 cylinder the exhaust manifolds and pipes seems to run from the engine toward the front of the bus then at about halfway or a third of the way of the length of the bus U-turn back running pipes out the rear of the bus to send the exhaust out the rear.

The TiiCo conversion has a shorter exhaust system that pretty much heads straight to the exisiting waterboxer muffler. Now I understand there is an issue with the resonance on the TiiCo conversion linked to the sound produced by the exhaust having something to do with the length of the exhaust and vibration (?). The TiiCo conversion from my experience is a bit loud (I don't have one but have seen and heard them).

I'm wondering, first if I'm right about the route of the SA exhaust which I think has the muffler under the sliding door area similar to area where the propane tank is on a Westy, (I mean I know different sides, but you know...) and if the lengthy exhaust system would cut out the resonance of the the in-line 4 conversion. And if the lengthy exhaust would cut down the noise would it be possible to fit a similiar system on a Bus converted to an in-line 4 with the TiiCo kit?

The noise is the one disadvantage I can see to the in-line 4 conversion.

The TiiCo site just for reference is: http://www.tiico.com/prod04.htm

(Speaking of conversions I saw what I think was a Subaru conversion on a maroon late model Westy heading west on the 101 or 134 yesterday near Hollywood, CA with a Thule rack up top. Anyone on the list? I've gotta say that engine had a sound that was suble but commanded respect. Really nice clean Bus)
