Bigger ET = smaller track. Smaller ET = wider track. MJS

Could someone refresh my memory on what exactly wheel offset numbers mean? For example, does a wheel of ET45 result in a wider or narrower track than a wheel of ET38? Put another way, does a wheel with a higher ET number space the wheel closer to the outside of the vehicle, or will it sit further inboard? Thanks, I know I have saved a primer on this, but damned if I can find it. Best wishes, Tony Anthony L.
