Subject: questions about my upcoming task of heads and bearings...

Hi Bob, or should I say Mr. Donalds... Thanks again for the support with my oil pressure crisis. I am planning next week to be a committed week of oil and precision.

I have a couple of questions that if you have time I would appreciate any response, but no pressure. I hope you don't mind but I'm sending this to the list as well, but hopfully, no intense controversies arise out of these simple ones.....

1. My engine gasket kit came with one tube of goo. I understand that different sealer (yellow? orange?) goes on the outer head nuts (surface, not threads) where can I get this stuff? VW dealer? alternate sealant? Kinda a gray zone for me.

2. The water jacket gasket..... No mention of where sealant is to be applied into the groove (between the gasket and the block). Yes? No? Just FYI, right now I only have the Haynes manual, but the Bentley is in the mail on its way... I broke down and coughed up the cash. So maybe all these questions will be answered then. (but I'll go on.....)

3. I FINALLY figured out what you were describing on the phone about the thread rod/ piston pin extraction part. Do you have any write-up on this or size description for these parts? (preferably size) I'm still fuzzy on the what holds the nut from spinning after the pin comes out some and the nut cannot be held with a wrench.....?? Obviously that's where I lost you. Also, how easy do the pins go back in? I'm sure this will hold an interesting response. I noted there's a special VW tool (#3091) to do the same job as the threaded rod do-it-yourselfer. What do you, the professional, use?

4. Antiseize on the stud threads? Dry?

I think that's it. I'm spending the week gathering work tools, rags, buckets, etc. etc. I'm hoping it will all go smoothly. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Brian Cochran 84 westy w/ 2.1 + AT Carnation WA
