the extra turn after reaching the lower torque valve is great in that it
makes for a more consistant results in the torque from bolt to bolt.
These bolts works great on 1.8 jetta golf heads because when torqued
this way the pressure against the gasket is more consistant across the
head. Also as the engine heats up the flexing of the bolt in yeilding
state helps maintain a consant pressure against the gasket with less
change during the heat cycle. It is also very important that the
pressure against the gasket is still there when the engine cools off the
yeiding hardware does a great job of this. I think even with a higher
tension of the stretch to yeild bolt the 2.1 rod cap can move around
The problem seems to be as Pensioner pointed out to me that the 2.1
stretch to yeild rod bolt is a flexible joint.

Bob;
Thank you for the interesting link to automtiverebuilder.com.
The
article on connecting rod bolts was very informative, maybe too much
so.
Too much knowldge is a dangerous thing. Maybe I misunderstood but it
sounded like the 2.1L style rod bolts were "the way to go" because they
could provide te best stretch-to-yield results. The extra turn after
reaching the torque vaule negates variable rotational head bolt
friction.
Or something like that.
