I have no real strong feelings either way about closing the list. I could
easily open a hotmail
account to use when out of town.
I just question changing from the status quo for the little inconvenience of
hitting the "d" key a couple or three times a day. Keep in mind that you're
gonna have to do that anyway to delete all of the spam you get to your
personal addy, and to that of any other groups to which you may subscribe.
I get about five to eight spams a day, of which only 1 -2 are from Gerry
(bad day 4-5; most days, none - one). I'm gonna be deleting anyway, so the
stuff I get from Gerry isn't really that big a deal.

Curious you should bring up this point Rick, as I've suggested closing the
list to members recently too. I sensed some flack for the suggestion as I
was "adding to the junk" & I should just hit the delete key.
I've been subscribed now for about 3 years I think. In the past 6 months or
so, the junk has increased from none to quite a few almost every day. On
2/17, I started keeping track even. See below the signature line. (I know,
very Type A personality!).
Also consider this: (my math may not be totally accurate but...)
assume an average of 5k per message
X average of 2.5 messages/day (this will only get worse)
X 365 days in the year
= 4,562 k per year of crap in our archives and passing through our
system(s).
X 10 years that adds up 45,625 k of crap. It all adds up.
There are easy workarounds to a closed list. One can access the list
remotely by opening a free e-mail account on yahoo, or one of the other many
sources, and subscribe that way so they can post to the list from the road
in an emergency. All that crap will only increase over time and our
archives will contain all that stuff as well. At one time I read that all
unsubscribed addresses were held and passed on to the list only after
someone looked at them. I guess that wasn't or isn't happening. Tom, Ron?
Will you comment?
I reassert that we close the list. At least put it to a vote. (Do I even
want to open the vote can of worms on this list ?! I remember the stickers!)
Cheers,
Dave C.
