I did similar, the downpipe leaves the engine bay in front of the gearbox and enters first muffler. There is a 180 degree turn back just behind the fuel tank and the exhaust pipe enters second muffler. After a S elbow there is the third muffler beside the engine on passenger side. This is a very quite setup, too. You may find pictures about the system at my web site http://volksweb.relitech.com/helmut

But: The two mufflers below the center floor heats up the passenger room, not that nice during hot summer time. It keeps your feet warm during winter :-)

At present one cylinder on the I5 burns oil and therefore the exhaust noise is increased significantly. For the rear passenger it's getting very noisy on high engine loads, but still it isn't too noisy.

In future I would route all exhaust related pipes and mufflers somewhere inside engine compartment, even the temperature will get very high for the engine. Some airflow should be added. Maybe cutting out the license plate and replacing it by a grill.
