Subject:   happenings with home engine repair: The big picture (part 1)
Content-Type:   text/plain; format=flowed

Hello everyone! Well my home engine rebuild/everything else job is six days old now. Things are starting to come together, but I still have to make more trips to the parts stores.

Main reason: I have a 84 westy (1.9L std) with a 2.1 conversion. I guess I haven't thought about the real impacts of that. I looked at my new depot water pump this evening and it doesn't match. Add that in with an exhaust crossover I have to mail back to PA and that is more shipping cost. Question: What is the timing set at for this conversion? It's a 2.1, but Digijet....I'm sure it's written down somewhere.

BostonBob Donalds has been a great help through this project. I spoke to him today on the phone for 30 minutes about my fears with the wrist pin situation (which is turning out well) as well as other upcoming tasks. The copper color showing on the edges of my bearings, he told me, meant the end was near.

We also discussed my probable mistake with declaring my rod bolts as 1.9 bolts. They probably are 2.1 bolts; I was misled by my haynes manual. We were wrapping things up on the phone and I told him I had better let him get back to work. He replied that even though he didn't mind talking to me, that was probably a good idea, since two of his mechanics, the UPS guy, his wife, and half of a sandwich were waiting on him!

The bostonBob heads look SOOOO pretty, I think I might order another set to display on the endtables in the living room.

Today I drained more of the coolant out of the radiator(still one hose left), installed my 45 bucks worth of three engine mounts (one of those "surprise" costs), front seal replaced, AT gastkets replaced, pistons cleaned, cylinders picked up from the shop and cleaned, rings installed, etc.

Yesterday my big project was the heater valve up front. The thing had been leaking. It was labor intensive mostly because it's a hard to reach place, but I got 'er!! Heater hoses looked bad, so I replaced them. WHy spend the back on VW brand when the buck-a-foot hose is available from the local shop? (I didn't replace the flaired section going to the right head.

Other projects will be listed on separate threads in order to appease the short-attention spans. Brian Cochran Carnation WA all responses welcomed.....and sorry--no pics, I never got any more sponsors.
