Karl,
you have to grab the lifters w/ one finger or w/ a screwdriver.....be nice &
patient
w/ the screw driver. It also helps to have a magnetic pen to bring it out a
bit before
flicking it out w/ a screwdriver. I'm sure you already know of the
colapsable pushrod tube that you can purchase yo do this job. As far as
identifying the lifter, do this:
take a long screwdriver and use it as a stethescope. place it on the head
near the valve train. This will locate the clacking noise which is actually
excesive valvestem clearance. That is what the clacking noise is. once yu
get close, shut it down, pull off the valve cover and check the clearance
for the valves. like you would for mechanical lifters. The flat lifter will
have a valve alot more than the required spec for hydraulic lifters ( I
think it is 0.006') that's for hydraulic water cooled. Check your Bentley to
confirm specs. Once you locate the valve with the excessive clearance, that
is your respective bad lifter.

How the heck do you get the lifters out? I've turned my engine, sans heads,
on its sides, and only two have dropped out. Also, how do you tell which
one(s) are making the noise?
