I ran my van for 1 1/2 years with a 1.6. It was slow, but was faster than
the diesel.  I looked into just swapping heads, apparently it involves some
machine work. I burned a couple exhaust valves, finally replaced it with a
1.8
Much better.  It would be $200 well spent.
