The short shift kit raises the pivot point of the shifter about 1 to 1.5". Net result is a smaller amount of travel at the top of the shifter for the same amount of travel at the bottom of the lever.

The easiest way to see it is to hold a pencil between your index and middle finger about 1" from the bottom of the pencil and move the top of the pencil to draw a line about 1" long. Now move your pivot point (two fingers) up the pencil about an inch and draw another 1" line and see how much less travel is required at the top of the pencil to draw the same length line.

When you add the 5.5" shifter extension, with the short shift kit, the amount of travel at the knob will be about the same as a stock length lever without a shift kit. If you tried the extension without the short shift kit, you would bash your knuckles on the dashboard in first and 3rd gear.

I installed mine about 8 months ago and like it.

Hey List,

What exactly is the berg short shift kit? I've read many threads concerning this item, but do not fully comprehend what it is. Thanks.
