Probably because the rear wheels are inset about an inch more than the fronts. The Borbet wheels sold by Winkler through it's dealers have a wider lip for the rears. When they are installed in the 2wd Vanagon the wheels and tires are lined up when viewed from the front or rear of the vehicle.
