Recently, I read an article in an auto mechanic's journal regarding engine
rebuilds.  One thing it mentioned is that at least one ring manufacturer does
not recommend cylinder honing.  Not because honing is a bad thing to do, but
because the cylinders ore often not cleaned properly afterwards and as a
result, the new rings are worn out in short order by the grit left from the
honing operation.  The article went on to say that cleaning with solvent is
not good enough and that the cylinders need a thorough scrubbing with plenty
of soap and hot water.  It showed a block being scrubbed with a giant-sized
bottle brush.
