Subject: Trouble Fitting I-4 Engine Into '90 Vanagon
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

I now have the I-4 engine bolted to the ACW transmission in my '90 Vanagon. I'm using the Vanagon diesel parts and mounting the engine at a 50° angle. The rightside engine carrier is attached fore and aft and the bonded rubber mounting is attached to it and to the right engine support. The bonded rubber mounting is pressed hard against the rear of the mounting cage welded to the engine carrier. The left carrier, when attached fore and aft and with the bonded rubber mounting positioned in its cage, has the stud, meant to attach it to the left support, forward of its mounting hole in the support by 25 mm. The support/engine/tranny need to move forward 25 mm.. The carriers on both sides fit perfectly in their mounting brackets, and it is the engine that needs to move forward. The amount of forward movement is'nt equal for each side, but this can be accommodated I believe.

Is the ACW trans. longer than the trans. that comes with the '82 diesel Vanagon? If so, has anyone modified the front trans. mount to gain the distance needed to fit the I-4 engine to the carriers? I would appreciate advice, voices of experience, and help.

-Dana-
