Even though I have been on the list for about 6 years, I tend to not post
much in the way of advice because I usually don't have a clue.
It appears that two vanagons with identical symptoms require different
solutions neither of which would seem logical to the problem.

I bought an 86 in 94 that has needed just about every repair ever discussed.
