Geoff,

If you have a stock radio or similar, there is usually no nut in there. The rear stud (bolt) attached to the radio and is simply held by friction to the rubber plug which is in turn held in place by the metal holder attached in back of the dash. Once you disengage the side clips at the front of the radio, you should be able to pull the entire unit out. Take care to save the rubber plug. You can reuse it for the new radio.

The plug will occasionally get stuck in the holder. It's easier to remove it first. Then install on the new radio. Then push it all in it in as a unit.
