The www.type2.com web site has a list of engine sounds from John Muir. The lifter sound is there, as is the rod knock. The rod knocking one is worth listening to just for the spoken intro....

What you are describing may be lifter noise. Use some Marvel Mystery Oil or something else designed to loosen up a stuck lifter.
