I have this answer for ya, Ive done the job twice. You'll need a small allen wrench to remove the shifter handle, and a phillips. There are four screw on the shifter base housing.

There are two bulbs under there, one up by the P for park, and one down in the D's. It lights of nicely. Bring the old bulb to a VW dealer, or get the part number. VW makes a lot of varieties of housings for the little bulb. Now that I think of it, on newer models the bulb may slide out of the plastic base.

Be careful of the wiring. I didn't get my wire out of the way of the shifter and they were eaten but the sliding mechanism--cost me a fuse and a bulb. My "P" doesn't light up now, but good enough. enjoy Brian Cochran 84 westy Carnation WA

Hello all, I was just making a list of those little things that constantly need = attention.=20 At night with the lights on I cannot tell which gear selection I am in. = Should there be a light behind the PRND21 plastic? Every other automatic I have = owned had some sort of backlight. If so how can I remove the plastic housing to = access the bulb?

Thanks in advance, Chris 86 Westy _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
