I tried to respond directly to Jake Evans of Halifax Canada but mail failed...

An early Porsche 911 six will bolt in (150~200hp) with minor fabrication (rear mounts/engine compartment sealing) and they are not all that expensive. A few years ago I was planning to put one in my 78 Campmobile...(wife spent my funds on more important stuff? and I wound up putting a VW motor back in it... 2.0 liter just like what comes in an 80 model). There is a Porsche "dismantler" in Atlanta GA and they priced a 2.0 liter 901 style motor (air cooled flat six) with carbs for $1000. They told me this is the only Porsche 6 that will bolt to VW transaxle...any later style Porsches will require the Porsche transaxle as well which makes the project no longer a "bolt in"(?) and considerably more expensive. By the way, (Jake) if you buy the 80 model (gas engine) vanagon, you do realize that it is air cooled and Subaru/Golf/Jetta transplants will require radiator and lines...which makes it really a pain. If you want to do one of these conversions try to locate a water-cooled vehicle to start with. This overcomes this hassle and you'll have heater/defroster to boot. Hope this helps.
