Hi all, The Bentley manual 80.16 shows that the restrictor should go in the "inlet" hose that feeds into the water valve on the side of the heater core. However, on page 19.10 it is noted that on the 1983-1985 vans, the metal T-piece (that feeds the rear heater) should be replaced with the uprated white plastic version and the flow restrictor from the inlet fitting of heater valve should be removed (omitted?). This comes from a Bentley manual covering 1980-1991. Earlier Bentley editions did not include notations of upgrades and improvements. Hope this is helpful. The issue of replacing this restrictor has come up many times.
