I thought this was pretty much common knowledge on this list. Frequently
I've heard list members say it's hard to find a good syncro westy for less
than $15K. When I shopped the net for mine I was looking for low mileage
and pristine condition. I found one with 65K on it at $20K in SF (that the
guy didn't really want to sell), one with 58K on it at $27K in New Jersey
and one with 38K on it for 30K in Seattle. I tried to buy the one in New
Jersey after I had talked the owner into taking 25K. Sfter six weeks of
negotiating and planning on the hookup, she backed out, saying she just
couldn't part with it. I finally went for the one in Seattle believe it or
not. It's embarrassing to admit now that I've been on the list for awhile,
but I paid $29K for her. But she did have 38K original miles and was
immaculate. Yes I've put even more money into her since, but she's sweet
now and hopefully will be for a long time.
I wasn't nearly as knowledgable then as I am now after about eight months on
the vanagon and syncro lists (listening in on you guys has taught me a lot).
If I had it to do over again I would study the list and wait until the right
one came along... probably one from a listmember that knew the bus inside
and out. It's hard to live in the middle of nowhere and find just what you
want 3K pluss miles away. At least for me, $20K and up for syncro westys is
for real... I can testify to that.
