I'm far from being a wiz on the vanagon, but learning
anyway I heard that the 02 sensor should be replaced every 30k
if I'm wrong please correct me. my van coffs a bit also and will
replace the 100.00 02 sensor

Dude! I am having the same exact problem with my 85GL. However my sensor
has yet to be replaced. For the complete job here in Nevada, it is going to
cost me $250, parts & labor.
I had the starter replaced and it fixed the problem for about 2 days, then
the hesitation began again. Please, someone advise us!!!!
Thanks,
Trea

Subject: O2 Sensor Questions

I've been experiencing some engine troubles over the past while with my
85GL. Upon acceleration my engine hesitates and stubles with no power. I
checked and cleaned the AFM, made sure there were no air leaks, replaced air
filter, and put in a new Temp II sensor. After all this it did idle better
and run well. When it was causing all the problems it happened to be very
wet outside, eiter wet snow or lots of rain. I assumed it must be an
electrical connection somwhere. Well today the hesitation started again
(crappy here today.....wet, snow etc.) I immediatly pulled over and heard
the engine stumble and run bady. I then disconnected the O2 sensor and all
is well again. Could it in fact be a screwed O2 sensor or the wire that
connects it to the ECU???? I'm not sure of the age of the sensor.
Also, upon pricing a new sensor I got some different results. The dealer
here (Ont Canada) wants $140 for a new one. The local autoparts store has
one in stock for $50. It is not a Bosch but he says is made by Bosch under
the name "Neumo" (or something like that). The list vendors want ~$30US.
What should I do.
Lastly, is it bad to be driving the van with the O2 sensor disconnected????
thanks,
Chad
