Karl,

You suspect correctly. I'm not sure about the exact parts breakdown of the S&S system but it can't be too terribly different from stock. I bought a set of Dansk pipes from Bus Depot and had them coated locally (by Polymer Dynamics - polydyn.com) after I spent a lot of time grinding and smoothing the joints. Coating the three pipes cost $175. Looks good. With gaskets, new hardware, and custom fit Turbo Max muffler and tailpipe the whole system pushed $500 without replacing the cat and not counting knuckle skin. Swain Tech (swaintech.com) also does coating via mail order and is highly recommended by the Wasserboxer Performance Man himself Robert Lilley.
