I have the VDO sender in my sump. No engine or sender modifications are required.

The oil drain plug, that I have in my hand from my '87 Vanagon is m14x1.5, 13mm across the flats.

My spare VDO sender, that I have in my hand, is part number 323 055 300F m14x1.5, 17mm across the flats, with a spade fitting.

For a source: http://www.vdona.com/online%20catalogs/performance%20catalog/Perf%20Cat%20HT ML/perf%20cat%20senders%20frames.html , just from a net search.

I took a cheap 17mm socket mounted in my drill press and using a die grinder ground the outside of the socket to just under 25mm in diameter. This is a close fit in the sump recess, but no engine modifications are required.

As the threads are not NPS, national pipe standard, no thread sealant is required, just the copper crush washer.
