Just to clarify, since people have been responding regarding different years of Vanagons, perhaps leading to some confusion ... Yes, you can modify the sump plate or the sender, and thereby replace the drain plug with the VDO sender if you have a wasserboxer. However, if you have an aircooled Vanagon you will have to drill a hole, as the drain plug is a different size.
