Subject: What's the correct TDC mark on a 1.6 Diesel (in a vanagon)?

I just got the engine back together after a new headgasket & rings, pump refurbished - by a bosch agent & injectors tested too.

I started it up and boy did it smoke ..white I think ...adjusting the cold start cable seemed to make a difference but not much - maybe more in my inagination.

Engine ran rough ...like it was only running on 2 cylinders.

I'm begining to wonder whether I timed it correctly. What I noticed is that when I previousl timed the engine, I used an 'upright' on the pressure plate as the TDC mark - I painted it white for easy reference. With the head off I found 'another' tdc mark - a V indent - which really is at TDC i.e. the #1 piston reaches the top of its stroke. So when I put it all back together I used my 'New' TDC mark.

The difference between my 'old' and the new mark is about 1" on the pressure plate.

So, question is ...what is the real TDC ....the Bently manual is as useful as ever - it does have a picture but I can't really tell for sure which is the correct mark.

Any other advice welcome.

Steve
