Ever use an atomizer? The exhaust leak will do about the same thing with exhaust gasses... (I'm almost done with my smog class as I type..) Gas will try to escape out that leak.. but then in the same instance.. act like the old time atomizer-style perfume bottles, and suck air in. This will really throuw the O2 sensor for a huge loop.. making it send a signal to the ECU. This will cause the vechile to run much leaner than what the engine really is running. Plus, trust me on this.. after much ado wiht my own Buick, I finally discovered a small leak at a weld in my own exhaust system (in my Buick), causing the exact smae conditions. Hope this helps some...
