In Closed Loop the FI system constantly corrects the Fuel Injection to provide the best compromise between power, fuel economy, and emissions. 14.7 to 1 by mass, not volume.

The most horse power out of the engine at a certain RPM would use more fuel.

The best fuel economy at a given RPM would use less fuel but NOX skyrockets, and the power curve degrades sharply.

Bosch's closed loop system is a big advancement over carburetors or open loop FI systems. But I can understand why people abandon it after searching high and low for solutions to performance problems with our Vans.
