Sounds fishy to me. I just replaced the window track-gearbox assembly on my '88
and the replacement from VW goes in just like the factory. (The motor itself
bolts into the gearbox.)

However, it is a bit of a bear to get the motor unit in, unless you figure out
that you have to twist the cables and work the motor into it's place. It is a
very tight fit.  If you did not have a Bentley that mentioned the trick to this,
I could see where you might conclude it was impossible to put the motor where it
belonged, and use the big hole in the door where the speaker is.

The repair shop story does not inspire one with confidence.
