Glen... I would have though all that top notch military training would have prepared you for something like this! :)

You are looking for OHMS or resistance. You need an analog meter to get a really good result from this as you are looking for a smooth increase or decrease in the resistance.

With the AFM on the table in front of you and the black plastic cap on top pin one is on the left. Pins 2 and 4 are the air-flow meter, pins 1 and 4 are the temp sender. You should be able to move the AFM slowly and not see any spikes or dips in resistance. A digital multimeter isn't fast enough to pickup these dips or spikes.

Hi Volks,

I have my AFM out of the vehicle. and in front of me with my multimeter. Can any one tell me which pins I need to connect to, for checking the meter? They are not numbered, so if you could tell me from the prospective of looking straight at the connection on the AFM. Is it resistance or volts that I need to watch as I move the flap? Is it just a smooth increase in the numbers or is there a set range of numbers? I don't have my Bentley or the vehicle with me at this time, only the AFM it self minus the air box.
