Subject: AUTO Tranny '84 vs.'89..any differences?

I just found a donor '84 auto tranny for my '89 Wolfsburg, any gurus out there know of any obvious differences (gear ratios, final drive ratios, cooler differences?) The housings appear identical and cabling connections appear identical. Just thinking about this option since it costs me no money for the unit (I pull, I keep, owner gets removed engine). If it doesn't work, I will have a core AT/Diff/torque converter, at the least I may have some parts for others. Another issue is the fact of utilizing a used tranny, I plan to change screen, fluid, pan seal and diff fluid, anything else I should do?..change torque converter fluid-is this a simple drain and refill thing? I've read the posts on the torque coverter seal and will go with the list.

Thanks
