I was discussing the repair of a 2.1L case with some damage under the water pump with a couple of mechanics. After studying the damage I am not so sure it is a problem. The water pump does not depend on any clearance from the engine case. The impeller's blades face the body of the water pump so wear in the engine case should not affect the pressure. The area behind the pump has only one outlet so I can not see how loss of material in this chamber could be a problem. Please pick up a water pump and inspect it carefully before responding.
