I hate to chime in so late on this thread, but I am in the same boat. I know this doesn't help, but I feel your pain.

We paid full retail for our 1991 Syncro Westy in 1999--26k. It only had 27k miles on it and had never been camped in. It was originally sold by York VW in PA; We picked it up from a really nice couple in Gettysburg. (No rust at all.) After seeing their add on the net, I basically begged them to sell and they took a month to give in and take our money. We had missed out on several vans in four states and every one of them had at least three times the mileage, but were only a few thousand less.

We flew out with no return ticket, and the first time we drove it was out of their driveway on our way home. Everything worked. It was like new. Yes, I do feel lucky. We could've have easily been given the business.

Sorry to say that every dent in it has been my doing (not counting all the d@mn door dings--some people's kids).
