I have a few of questions about my 85 Westy, all stock. First one is, can I swap a dash pod(instruments) from a newer Van with Tach into my 85? I need a Tach more than I need a clock(even though I would still have one). Is it bolt on swap exept adding a wire for the tach? Or is it a real big wiring mess? I saw it done in Roberts 82, but did not have a Vanagon at the time so I did not ask too much about it. Secondly, the engine seems to idle rough, and seems to load up. I know I should look at vacuum hoses for leaks for the rough idle, but where should I start looking for the loading up problem? I need to get the emissions checked and want to get this fixed first. third, how should the trans down shift?(auto) If I get to a hill or other area needing to down shift, I push the petal to the floor and it does nothing. Is it a switch like th old Bus, or it it vacuum or throttle operated? What tells the trans to down shift. Right now I do it manualy(hence the need for a tach!). Any help would be great.
