John,

Years ago I had a Volvo with grundgy seats. The cloth was tightly woven with no nap. My wife found a recipe for upholstery cleaner which was 1 cup Tide +1 cup ammonia dissolved in 1 Gal. of water. We pulled the seats thoroughly wetted them, scrubbed them with the solution and thoroughly rinsed them. The rinsing may be more important than even the washing. We then spent much time going over them with a wet/dry vacuum. After drying for a couple of days, they looked new. I later thought that running a dehumidifier in the passenger compartment with the seats in place would have greatly speeded the drying.

I was once talking with a Volvo dealer who was also an old Volvo enthusiast. He commented on how durable the old cloth seats were and I told him about my experience with cleaning them. He said all I had to do was to remove the covers, throw them in a washing machine and hang them out to dry. I guess which method is best depends on whether or not you have a pair of hog-ring pliers.
