Subject: Replace clutch?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi,

All this talk about pre-emptive maintenance on our Vanagons prompts a question. I have a '90 Westy, with 130K miles, which I bought new and have maintained, -uh, well religiously. Gotta be careful there. Someone with a howitzer might think it is an idol and start blasting away. The only time, other than the hesitation syndrome, that it has let me down, was a thrown power steering belt, due to a rock. I carry spares and replaced it.

Now the question. The clutch is original, but other than a noisy throwout bearing, it is not slipping or shuddering. I am thinking about having it (the whole clutch bit) done, don't want to do it myself, and the nearest place locally is 45 miles away and they take days to do anything. Next month I will be in Missoula, Montana, with a place to stay and transportation, and am thinking about having it done there. Any reason NOT to go ahead and have it done and does anyone know anything about Mountain Motors in Missoula?

Thanks for all the help in the past.

Jerry
