It wasn't until the '80s that VINs were standardized and coded to contain lots of good info. There isn't much you can glean from earlier VINs, possibly year/month of manufacture and delivery destination, but that would have to come from someone who knew how VW kept track of VINs in those days. -- Stuart MacMillan Seattle
