When the spring fails the flap is still attached, but won't stay closed. The PO of my van drilled a hole through the flap and the plastic underneath, then put a self tapping screw in to hold it down. Its a bit of a pain, but if I leave the screw loose, I can remove it with my fingers when its time to connect water or power. I think a magnet and steel place glued in the right places might work well too.
