I did a clutch and AATransaxle rebuilt transmission replacement in the fall to one of our '81 air cooled Vanagons, and we had the flywheel resurfaced at a NAPA Auto Parts machine shop here in Atlanta---cost was $28.00 with a three hour turn-around time. I wondered about grinding metal away and needing a new flywheel sooner than later, but a clutch lasts a few years, and the flywheels are about $160.00 new on the Bargain Page at Bus Depot...... I think of flywheels like wheel brake drums, which need grinding to true them up when doing new shoes, so the shoes do not prematurely wear out or fail to do their assigned task.
