Subject: Caravelle GL?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hi Volks,

As I drove to work this morning I found myself following behind a rather nice T3 Caravelle.Good nick, metallic red, factory alloys, Projekt Zwo style alloy rear bumper etc. When I pulled up behind it at a set of lights I noticed it was badged "Caravelle GL".Hmmm... It then occurred to me I had never seen a GL badge on a Caravelle before (or on any Transporter here in Oz that I can remember)

T3s here were usually badged Transporter,Caravelle,Carat,Bus (very early ones)or for a very brief period,Multivan....and of course, Syncro badges where appropriate. GL (and other variant) badging I thought was a Nth American thing depicting various levels of refinements & appointments, but that was not how Australian spec ones came badged.

Is the badging "Caravelle GL" common elsewhere? I don't recall seeing it mentioned in anybody's signatures as their particular model.I'm wondering if I was following a South African import (not one of the post-wasserboxer models-this was definately a WBX) as we do sometimes get SA imports,us both having RHD vehicles.

Have I been sadly wanting in my previous awareness of T3 variants (and I thought my VW obsession of many years would have meant otherwise) or did I see an unusual one,at least for Oz anyway... Maybe they stuck a GL badge on from something else?...dunno. Someone out there must have the answer and VW obsessed minds with too much time on their hands need to know...;-)
