Jay,

The trick is to gently pry the clip away from the wheel -- doesn't take a lot of force. Look closely at the big watch spring in the center and you'll be able to tell which way to turn the wheel to tighten the spring. I don't have mine in front of me but I think you turn the wheel clockwise to tighten the spring -- be careful about doing exactly what I say since I have been known to say something completely backward from what I did. Be sure to count the notches as you turn the wheel so you can put it back if the adjustment doesn't work.
