Subject: Re: Golf II instruments fit Vanagon cluster?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Fitting the speedo is only a problem if the unit cannot physically be installed. I have my original 84 T3 cluster (yuck) and the Bus Depot's new cluster. I really don't want to have to chop either one up in order to convert it. Can the Golf instruments be reinstalled in the Golf pod after modification to fit the T3?

A VDO specialist/agent told me that the speedo cable can have an inline gearbox fitted to correct the rotation speed if it's purely cable-driven, which as far as I can tell is the case.

I think I have a posting printout somewhere which someone sent me re fitting a Golf II tacho into the T3 cluster.

I don't ABSOLUTELY have to have a 220kmh speedo, but if my van will do that speed I'd like to know it. And I'll want to do it at least once! (wonder what mpg I'll get at that speed, with SVX and tall-geared G50 trans). I've done 180 several times, including passing a Toyota Hiace sitting on 80kmh or so. It was quite stable, no wandering. This was in a straight line, mind.

I won't be going over 7000rpm much, but I hear the DOHC Subies can go way past that without damage, so might occasionally be tempted to see...
