Subject: always a second fuel filter?

Speaking of the "suction-side filter," my vanagon (87, 2.1) only has the Bosch filter on the high pressure side (between the pump and the regulator / injectors). My interpretation of Bentley has been that some models have NO filter between the gas tank and pump. Am I wrong about this, and the PO removed it?

Thanks, Jim
