for those of you who thought we got a killer deal on our '87 syncro westfalia, we did. but not as good as we thought. our new van needs, shall we say, just a little bit of work. to wit:

*we have torn front upper ball joint boots *our 1-3 crossover exhaust pipe is crushed, and the 2-4 is nearly rusted through *the clutch releases at the top of its pedal arc, implying that the disc is thin *it vibrates severely at 35mph on up to 45mph, where i stopped pushing it (propellor shaft or vc problem) *the head gaskets (sworn to me to not be weeping) are weeping, but no drops on the concrete and *the alternator bracket is breaking

so, we'll be doing a little bit of work. and everyone was right. peter and co. at volks cafe are excellent. he says he is more than happy to give me any and all advice and help me with jobs; they're busy enough. but they're going to do the head gaskets, full on. at the same time they're going to bolt on the exhaust system i give them. and i am going to disconnect the driveshaft this weekend and give it a test drive at speed. then i will look into the alternator bracket and not worry about the ball joint boots and the clutch. for now.

can anyone tell me what tools i should be using to drop the propeller shaft? i have read the e-groups syncro archives for discussions of rebuilding. heads up, budd...*s*

cheers! bill

*still* feeling like we got a killer deal...
