VW paid Tatra a settlement for an alleged infringement of the Beetle CHASSIS
design. The single back-bone design was shown by Tatra at the Berlin auto
show back when Ferdinand Porsche was busy trying to develop what was to be
known as the KDF Wagen, and, eventually, the VW Beetle. Funny enough, Skoda
(Another Czech wonder) bought Tatra and VW eventually bought Skoda. What
comes around, goes around.
I am not familiar with any engine design infringements on part of VW. I
know that the early VW flat-four was based on an aircraft design and chosen
for its ability to run for long periods of time at, what was considered
then, high RPM.
This kind of cross-breeding is nothing unusual in the automotive world and
we should never expect a pure-bred auto by virtue of its country of origin.
Although I am sure they exist, somewhere.
