Scott, This repair has been discussed on the list on numerous occasions. Tightening the adjusting nut too much can cause the base of the mirror mount to crack. Doing this to a mirror w/ a cracked base can only cause the crack to get worse. Eventually the crack will be so bad that no amount of tightening will correct the problem. Then the only solution would be to replace the assembly. Or if appearance is not critical, you can use a hose clamp to hold the cracked pieces together.
