The other day I was working on a ladies Vanagon. The Mirrors were all floppy and would fall as you drove the car. I pulled the mirrors off and turned them over. There is a nut and washer on top of a spring. Pull the nut, washer and spring. Now remove the half round disk, this will alow you to pull the base off. Clean up the shaft, disk, and base. Lube the shaft and put back together. Now the nut can be tightened up against the spring and the mirrors will not fall anymore. I wanted to pass this on because I have seen many Vanagon with floppy mirrors. Its a cheap easy fix, about 30-45min.
