Hi Darrel, If you are a semi- purest go with the i4, the 2.2L subaru also has good solid torque. They will both move your van quite well. I would like to try an i5 but have not been able to find a bell housing or adapter plate. If someone has one they would like to sell or know where one can be had (other than midnight auto supply) please drop me a note. Maybe someone wanting a 5 speed from South Africa would like to get together and import a 5 speed with i5 bell housing. My son Tom and I converted his 86 westy to a subaru 2.2L last year. He has been on the road a bit over 15k miles and his experience is it is easier to find a garage / mechanic to work on the 2.2L than the wasser boxer. The 2.2L is easier to work on in a van than it is in a legacy. Imho it is much easier and probably cheaper to repair a wasser boxer than do a conversion of any kind . Best of luck with your quest.

Your other brother Darrell
