1) not really. If your coolant is new-ish (saw a year old) then you can
get away with just making a small mess on the driveway (hose it down so
the cats or small children don't drink it- really) and then you'll have to
add the quantity you lost. And of coures you need to bleed. But if your
coolant is old or of questionable variety just replace it all and try to
flush the system.

2) i have an 84 1.9 and put a stock 86 degree one in from TBD. Be sure to
get the O-ring that goes with it!!!!!!  If you are going to be in the
desert for 11 months of the year and anticipate never using your heater,
then you may want the cooler t-stat. Otherwise go stock like it was ment
to be.
