We had a '61 Chevy Impala hardtop that you could start without a key
(remember those ignition switches?) if it wasn't in the lock position (just
"off"). We wired the cigarette lighter as a kill switch by running a
ground wire to the ignition coil. When you parked it, you could just push
in the cigarette lighter and it wouldn't start. One time my brother was
driving on a cold morning and he decided to blast me with cold air by
opening the passenger side footwell vent. (There was a cable control under
the middle of the dash.) I decided to get even by hitting the cigarette
lighter. The engine shut off for a few seconds until he pulled the lighter
knob out. Then, boom. All the unburn gas lit off and blew a big hole in
the rusty muffler. That car never sounded better. Sorry for rambling...
On a Vanagon, it would be easy to put a switch on the fuel pump.

I had a friend in high school with a Monte Carlo and the p.o. had put in a
switch hidden under the dash by the steering column. He flipped the switch
before starting it and he'd flip it back when he turned it off thus
disabling the ignition(?). He used to toss the keys at people and tell em
"if you can start it, you can have it" and no one could figure it out. Is
this a possibility? BTW I have a 200lb Old English Mastiff as my alarm but
I
can't teach him to call the cops and he sure as h*ll won't bite anyone (not
that I'd want him too! ouch!!).
